Pathways in Aquatics Showcase: featuring Aesthete Aquatics Academy

Sat 2 & 9 Dec, 1:30-3:00pm @ Hwa Chong Institution Pool

The Swim Lab is happy to partner with AAA for our inaugural Pathways Showcase – to inspire our Learn to Swim kids to take their swim journey further!

When joining us at The Swim Lab, having your children learn water safety is often a family’s main priority (as it should be!). As your child develops into a proficient swimmer under the care of our coaches, they may have also discovered a love of the water and a passion for swimming along the way. In which case, what’s next?

In our Pathways Showcase, we introduce Learn to Swim students to three exciting aquatics pathways – competitive swimming, artistic swimming, and water polo.

Aesthete Aquatics Academy, founded in 2023 by Artistic Swimming Singapore SEA Games Gold Medalist and reigning National Champion Rachel Thean, offers both Artistic Swimming and Water Polo programs under their highly decorated and experienced coaches, and we are proud to partner with them to bring this experience to you.

Schedule of Activities

Explore pathways in aquatics, as a family

  • For kids age 6 and above, with basic swim proficiency (able to swim 10m unassisted)
  • Watch demonstrations from AAA’s young artistic swimmers and water polo players
  • Take part in your choice of trial activity: learn basic artistic swimming techniques, take part in a mini-water polo match or experience the fun of racing in a simulated mini-meet
  • Head Coach AMA: ask everything you or your child has always been curious about in artistic swimming, water polo or competitive swimming
  • Location: Hwa Chong Institution Pool, 661 Bukit Timah Road
  • $10 per participant (taking part in the breakout experience); free for spectators

Choose your breakout experience

Get a taste of what each aquatics pathway offers, in our beginner-friendly 30 min breakout sessions!

Note: Activities will be conducted in 1.2m pool depth. Participants should be age 6 or older, and able to swim 10m unassisted.

Development

Take part in a simulated meet!

Our coaches will explain the basic rules of racing and take swimmers through a mock warm up. Swimmers get to their lanes, then off they go! Swim as fast as you can across 20m, using any stroke, or even a kickboard! A fun way to get your kids’ adrenaline racing and build their swim confidence.

Artistic Swimming

Try out basic positions and fundamentals!

Our coaches and athletes will explain how to float gracefully on the surface while demonstrating the sculls and kicks that happens under the water. A sneak peek into what goes on at our classes and the start of your mermaid journey!

Water Polo

Love ball sports and the water? Why not combine both?

Swimmers will get to play a game of flippa ball – a modified version of water polo meant for budding water polo players. Learning the basics of ball handing while swimming, athletes will have a blast in the pool trying to score goals for their teams!

Development

  • Also known as Pre-Competitive Swimming
  • Swimmers learn important elements in competitive swimming not commonly taught in Learn to Swim programs: such as diving from the blocks, and tumble turns
  • Swimmers take part in friendly national or interclub meets where they can experience competitive racing without pressure
  • Development swimmers can move on to join a competitive swim club, or simply stay on for fun and fitness: the goal is up to you!
Try Development if:
  • You’re enjoying Learn to Swim and want to see how much faster and further you can go
  • You love being active and in the water!
  • You enjoy being part of a fun and supportive squad
  • You might want to represent your school or club in competitive swimming one day

Artistic Swimming

  • Artistic Swimmers can hear the music underwater with the help of underwater speakers! To synchronize their actions, counts are placed to each beat of the music
  • Artistic swimming was previously known as synchronized swimming until the name was officially changed by FINA (Fédération Internationale de Natation) in 2017 to better reflect the sport’s artistic and expressive elements
  • Singapore won the gold in the 2015 and 2017 South East Asian Games in Artistic Swimming
  • Athletes wear elaborate, water-resistant costumes and makeup to ensure they are visible and their expressions can be seen by the judges and the audience
  • Artistic swimmers develop strong bonds with their teammates due to the extensive time spent training and performing together. Teamwork and trust are crucial for success in the sport!
Try Artistic Swimming if:
  • You love swimming and dancing!
  • An added bonus if you have background in gymnastics or ballet
  • You love teamwork and want to forge new friendships
  • You love performing to an audience

Water Polo

  • Players don’t touch the bottom of the pool! Players in water polo are required to tread water throughout the game. They use a combination of eggbeater kicks and sculling to stay afloat while playing.
  • A standard water polo game is divided into four quarters, with each quarter lasting eight minutes. Overtime periods may be played if the score is tied at the end of regulation
  • Water polo involves complex strategies and tactics. Teams work together to create scoring opportunities and defend against their opponents
  • Water polo requires a combination of speed, agility, and strong swimming skills. Players must be able to swim quickly, change direction, and tread water effectively
  • Players use one hand to advance the ball and may only use the other hand for defense. They must pass, dribble, and shoot the ball while treading water

Try Water Polo if:
  • You love ball games
  • You love teamwork and want to forge new friendships
  • You want to improve your water safety and rescue abilities
  • If you have a competitive spirit and enjoy competing in sports!
